Nokia's assault on the US smartphone market has officially begun, with the Finnish firm's flagship Windows Phone handset the Lumia 900 launching on AT&T across the country.
Its debut was marked with a special launch event in New York's Times Square featuring a performance by pop star Nicki Minaj, backed up by what Nokia claims is one of the world's largest LED displays.

"The show marked the end of the smartphone beta test and the launch of the Nokia Lumia 900 in the United States," detailed Nokia on its Conversations blog.
"It brought Times Square to a virtual standstill last night as 30,000 people watched one of the biggest electronic take-overs of the iconic New York landmark."
The Lumia 900 comes after the launch of Nokia's first Windows Phone handset in the US, the more budget-conscious Lumia 710, which hit shop shelves back in January.
AT&T is to offer the Lumia 900 on a standard two year contracts for as low as $99, undercutting the carrier's cheapest iPhone 4S contract by $100.
