Definitely maybe: Top 10 mobile games industry predictions for 2013, by Fraser MacInnes

The first month in the year typically plays host to a flood of folks attempting to lay out just what's going to happen in the following 11.

2013 has been no different, and garnering the attention of many of you has been the carefully crafted predictions of former Pocket Gamer man Fraser MacInnes – and it's not hard to see why.

MacInnes – now with German start up Danke Games – doesn't pull his punches.

On his list of predictions for 2013 is the industry coming to terms with the fact that "HTML5 is not a platform", the slow demise of BlackBerry and the likely rise of Windows Phone 8, and an iOS 7 reveal that – as with its predecessor – leaves many underwhelmed.

App Store in 2012: Supercell and Backflip make $100 million from freemium faves

New year, new burst of stats from the industry's leading marketplace.

More interesting than Apple's angle, however – which focused on 20 billion apps having been downloaded across 2012 – was news that, combined, PocketGamer.biz favourites Supercell and Backflip made $100 million from Clash of Clans and DragonVille on iOS throughout the course of the year.

"It has been an incredible year for the iOS developer community," said Apple's senior VP of internet software and services Eddy Cue.

"Developers have made over seven billion dollars on the App Store, and we continue to invest in providing them with the best ecosystem so they can create the most innovative apps in the world."

Trip Hawkins joins with Moshi Monsters lead for educational games start up If

Few names in the industry can boast quite as an eventful career as Trip Hawkins – EA, 3DO and most recently Digital Chocolate all on his CV – and, if clicks on PocketGamer.biz are anything to go by, he's still got it.

Indeed, as PocketGamer.biz editor-at-large Jon Jordan revealed, Trip's latest project is likely to amass a fair amount of intention itself.

Hawkins' latest adventure sees him taking up residence at If You Can – a London-based outfit focusing on educational games for kids co-founded with Ben Geliher, before stints at Bossa Studios and NaturalMotion, previously made his name at Moshi Monsters' developer Mind Candy.

2012 in review: The best and worst performing mobile game shares

Part of accurately predicting the year ahead comes from coming to terms with what happened in the previous 12 months.

Or, as ed-at-large Jon Jordan put it, "there are many ways to stir the chicken guts and try to predict the coming year."

Naturally, then, taking a look at how some of the industry's biggest players performed on the market throughout the course of 2012 is somewhat valuable – and the results just may surprise you.

On the list are the likes of GREE, Glu, Gameloft, Gamevil, G5, and some other companies whose names don't begin with G.

Microsoft, Nokia, and Windows Phone 7.8's release date

By far the biggest story of the year so far- or, rather, stories – is the continued speculation around the launch of Windows Phone 7.8.

The update, which will serve as the last major roll out for the now cast adrift Windows Phone 7, was expected before the end of 2012, but never showed up. Nokia has since told us that an early 2013 launch is likely, but Microsoft has so far refused to comment.

Either way, page views on PocketGamer.biz suggest there is interest aplenty in whatever Microsoft decides to do with the update.
