Hot Five: Rovio turns publisher, ZeptoLab on life after Om Nom, and Windows Phone 7.8 gets dated
Welcome to PocketGamer.biz's weekly rundown of the stories clocking up the hits, picking up the click-throughs and generally keeping the advertisers happy by serving up page views.

Or, if you'd prefer, the top five stories currently dominating our readers' attention.

Each week, we'll be counting down the biggest news from the previous seven days, giving just a glimpse of the industry's big issues, from five to one.

Too many mobile games are just monetisation systems, reckons new entrant S2

The debate as to whether the free-to-play model encourages developers to focus on monetising their players rather than entertaining them isn't likely to die down any time soon.

Online PC gaming specialist turned mobile studio S2, however, has already made its mind up.

"There are a number of games that focus too heavily on monetising and not enough on bringing fun and engaging gameplay to their players," director of mobile Brad Bower told us.

"We're setting out to change that."

Whether the studio can reach such lofty ambitions will only be revealed when S2 – which is currently hiring to staff its new direction – launches its first mobile title.

RIM: BlackBerry 10 devices could be last we manufacture

If ever there was a case of a CEO admitting something he shouldn't, this was probably it.

Speaking to German paper Die Welt, RIM CEO Thorsten Heins suggested the company hasn't ruled out selling off its hardware business after the launch of BlackBerry 10. The firm is, for now, focusing on the forthcoming roll out of the platform, however.

Nonetheless, even the suggestion of a sell off is likely to raise eyebrows, with the already delayed BlackBerry 10 serving as the make-or-break last throw of the dice for a RIM fast losing market share for some.

Interestingly, selling off BlackBerry's hardware business was rumoured to be one of the suggestions Heins' predecessor – former co-CEO Jim Balsillie – is believed to have suggested to the board before he stepped down.

Om Nom and beyond: ZeptoLab, a studio profile

One week after our in-depth look at the making of Pudding Monsters, roving reporter Lee Bradley was yet again hooking up with Cut the Rope studio ZeptoLab for an inside look at operations at the developer.

Indeed, the Russian studio has enjoyed quite a rise, initially beginning life as a Palm OS developer called MuddyGlass.

Now, however, with one of smartphone's biggest IPs under its belt, all eyes are on ZeptoLab's next move.

"Semyon [Voinov, co-founder] and I were lucky enough to start working at the dawn of the mobile industry," said co-founder Efim Voinov .

"It's exciting to see how vast the changes have been, and how much the industry continues to evolve."

Exclusive: Rovio turns publisher as studio opens doors to third parties

It's not often that we drop an 'exclusive' bomb on these pages, but this story warranted it.

Rovio's transition from a first-party developer to a publisher taking on board titles from third-parties has been rumoured for almost two years now. Only now, however, is it a reality.

As revealed at this year's Mobile Games Forum 2013 – with a surprising lack of fanfare – Rovio is to publish Tiny Thief from Spanish developer 5 Ants this May.

The studio is yet to put out any official statement, but expect the hype to start building in typical Rovio style when the game's launch nears.

Microsoft: Windows Phone 7.8 to launch on 31 January

For the third week in a row, Windows Phone 7.8 news has topped our rundown – and, once again, by some distance.

Last week, however, may be the last we see of the drama for some time. The update, which brings Windows Phone 8-style functionality to the ageing OS, will begin to roll out to handsets at the end of January.

That's according to the Facebook page of Windows Phone Colombia.

Perhaps not the most reliable of sources, but the later launch of the Windows Phone 7.8 SDK for developers ahead of its launch seems to suggest this particular story has, finally, run its course.
