Best known for its Broken Sword series of adventure games, Revolution Software is embracing the brave new world of digital distribution by setting up a new label, called Revolution Pocket, to handle self-publishing duties for new projects and back catalogue games for the likes of iPhone, PSPgo and DSiWare.
Its first release will be cyberpunk point and click adventure Beneath A Steel Sky: Remastered for iPhone and iPod touch.
"Digital distribution has changed the game for developers," explains Revolution founder Charles Cecil. "We now have the creative freedom to do what we want, as well as the ability to communicate directly with our audience, which is a great privilege for Revolution because our games have such a loyal fanbase."
Revolution recently released a director's cut of the original Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars game for Wii and DS through Ubisoft. However, the company has always retained the rights to its games, a decision which now gives it a strong back catalogue to consider for re-release. As well as the Broken Sword series, this includes futureworld thriller In Cold Blood.
Cecil says the studio also has plans for new content, although don't expect any Bejeweled or Flight Control clones.
"People's initial impressions of games come from the graphics, and the gameplay needs to be good enough to get you through the first hour or so, but then there needs to be an interesting story to keep me playing," Cecil explains, of his game making philosophy.
As for the remastered Beneath A Steel Sky, this has been created using the original game code and assets. A new direct control system for the touchscreen has been added, as well as a context-sensitive hint system similar to that introduced to Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars: Director's Cut.
The opening cutscenes by 2000AD/Watchmen artist Dave Gibbons have been renanimated and the game's audio has been resampled.
Beneath A Steel Sky: Remastered is due to be released during September.
