The games division of RealNetworks [NASDAQ:RNWK] reported sales of $29.8 million for its second quarter ended June 30, 2009.
This is a drop of 15 percent year-on-year, and a drop of 9 percent compared the company's first quarter.
Real sells casual web games through portals such as RealArcade.com, GameHouse.com and Zylom.com, mobile games via carriers, and directly on the App Store.
Its best known releases include the likes of Tiki Towers, Sally's Salon and the Playman series, and licences including South Park.
In FY2008, its total games sales were $135 million.
Overall Q2 revenue for the company, which is split into technology and consumer (music, media software and games) parts, was $135.7 million, down 11 percent year-on-year.
Net loss was $188.3 million or $1.40 per share, compared with a net loss of $1.3 million, or $0.01 per share, in the second quarter of 2008
The company has $363 million in cash and short term investments.
This performance was partly put down to foreign currency exchange rate fluctuations negatively affected revenue by around $6.3 million. Of course, the high level of uncertainty regarding consumer spending and global economic trends were also highlighted.
"Looking forward, even though we expect the economy to remain weak, we expect to show sequential improvement in the second half of the year based in part on new products such as our innovative RealPlayer SP," said Rob Glaser, RealNetworks' Chairman and CEO.
RealPlayer SP is the company's new media player, which includes support for the Blackberry, iPod, iPhone and game consoles.
