The one-upmanship between the various smartphone platforms currently duking it out for headlines and consumer attention continues to heat up.
But while Apple, Google and RIM have been vocal, to-date we haven't heard much from Symbian, which thanks to Nokia support, has long been the leading smartphone OS in terms of number of devices.
And now it's confirmed some figures to put that status into context, with the news that a record breaking 27 million Symbian devices were shipped in Q2 2010.
It says this is the first time any smartphone OS has shipped over 25 million devices.
Such a number, which has been taken from the latest smartphone report by analytics firm Canalys, means Symbian shipped 298,000 units per day across the course of the quarter.
In comparison, Google says it's activating around 160,000 Android phones daily.
Super Symbian
"These figures make for very positive news for the Symbian community," says Symbian's executive director Lee M. Williams.
"The smartphone market place has become more crowded than ever, so the fact we continue to outsell our competitors by such large margins, combined with all the feature commitments and developments published on our roadmaps, make us highly confident in our outlook and we will continue to embrace the challenges ahead."
Of course, whether Symbian can maintain its position in a world that's increasingly competitive, remains to be seen.
The first test will be the success of the first Symbian^3 device - Nokia's N8 - which will ship in September.
