Augmented reality platform branching out

Layar preparing to launch iPhone SDK
Following yesterday’s report that Layar – the largest platform in mobile augmented reality (AR) – has secured further investment to the tune of $14 million from backers, which include Intel Capital, the company’s CEO has now outlined its immediate plans for growth.

In a blog post on Layar’s website, Raimo van der Klein expanded on his earlier promise of “providing our large ecosystem of content creators with the tools to build compelling and useful content” by introducing the Layar Player.

Layar Player SDK

Having already gained more than 1 million active users on Android, bada, and iPhone, Layar will hope to improve its visibility further on the latter platform by launching the Layar Player SDK soon for iOS.

This particular set of development tools will allow for the creation of AR content in any iPhone application, thus ensuring Layar’s ‘digital experience’ reaches a wider audience.

In spite of this potential milestone, Layar’s CEO was at pains to stress that his platform remains in its formative stages:

“Augmented Reality is in its infancy, much like television was before the growth of massively successful content formats like soaps, live sporting events and reality TV,” said van der Klein.

“It’s also comparable to YouTube before we all realised that we love to watch videos of kittens.”

Further research necessary

In addition to providing an iPhone SDK, the Layar organisation will be focussed on identifying profitable formats and content, carrying out research and analytics, and implementing image recognition capabilities into its AR software.

And will all of this be achieved from the company’s Amsterdam HQ? Not quite, for van der Klein revealed Layar is opening an office in San Francisco imminently to accommodate its burgeoning staff.
