One of the studios behind the casual focused EA Play label, the future of EA Bright Light is now in doubt with the publisher confirming it has entered a "formal consultation process" over its proposed closure.
The developer, which began life as EA UK in 1995, is best known in a portable sense for its recent Harry Potter releases on DS, but has worked across a plethora of IP and platforms for EA over the years.
While EA claims a final decision has not yet been taken, corporate communications exec Tiffany Steckler told GamesIndustry.biz any closure would be designed to reduce costs at the publisher.
Counting the costs
"After a review of all current and future projects, Electronic Arts has started a formal consultation process with its Bright Light employees over the proposed closure of the studio," said Steckler.
"The proposed changes will help centralise development on future projects, reduce development costs and will allow for better knowledge and talent sharing within the organisation."
Steckler confirmed EA will attempt to retain as many staff as possible if the closure goes ahead, relocating them to other areas of its business.
"Employees that are impacted will be considered for positions at other EA Studios including those in the UK," she concluded.
"The UK is a vital centre of game development for EA and we intend to maintain a strong presence here."
