Despite running GameHouse, part of Realnetworks, its president Matt Hulett reckons his company is a monkey in the gaming space.
"Most game developers are in the primordial soup but the monkeys [companies in the 10-40 staff situation] are nimble and creative," Hulett said in his talk 'Social Games 2015: Put evolution in play'.
Some of these monkeys will grow to become 800lb gorillas. A good example provided is King.com, which has had strong success on Facebook.
Then there are the industry's T-Rexes, such as Zynga and EA
"You can get eaten in a good way," Hulett said.
Growing together
But if you don't want to do that, to move from a monkey to a gorilla, developers have to think about technology, locationalisation and integration with lots of partner relationships.
"You can't do this all yourself," said Hulett.
He advised companies to partner with likesized monkeys.
"Working with bigger companies, the terms can become egregious," he ended.
