While the likes of Zynga are pulling back from real-money gambling, others are rushing towards real-money skill-based gaming.
One company looking to make full advantage of the shift is Czech outfit Cashplay.
It provides a platform that developers can use to enable skill-based player-versus-player wagering in mobile and online games.
Wanna bet on that?
Funded with a $3 million round, the company says it's working with 31 companies and over 50 games.
Indeed, the first iOS title using the platform - Crazy Lazy Runner from Spanish outfit G4M3 Studios - has just gone live.
The technology, which is available as an SDK or an API, also supports Android and Unity.
"Instead of driving gamers away with ads or in-app purchases - methods that simply don't work for the majority of titles - developers can use a competitive platform that not only makes money but also makes games more attractive to players," said Cashplay CEO Jarrod Epps.
"The fact we're able to offer this worldwide brings a massive potential audience to the game."
World of bets
Cashplay's service is available globally, with the exception of countries such as France, Japan, Italy, Belgium, Denmark, Turkey and certain US states.
Players have to register and log into Cashplay online system to wager real-money, loading up their account via PayPal, Visa and Mastercard.
Similar services include Skillz, which recently launched with Glu Mobile's Deer Hunter Reloaded game.
