The first non-Nintendo 3DS game to reach a million units sold is predictably the latest iteration of one of Japan's most popular franchises.
Monster Hunter Tri-G has managed to sell just over a million units since its 10 December release in its home territory.
The first two titles to achieve the milestone - Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land - also continue to sell well, topping the Japanese gaming charts in first and second place respectively.
Chart hunter
The latest charts, freshly translated by Andriasang, indicate that the 3DS remains the top dog in terms of overall sales, despite the PS Vita's recent Japanese release.
The figures, taken from 2-8 January 2, indicate that the 3DS sold 240,819 units, compared to 197,952 the previous week.
The PSP still manages to outsell Sony's newest console, with 71,033 sales compared to the Vita's 42,915.
Tellingly, not a single Vita title made it into the top 20 software sales, which were dominated by the 3DS.
