Unfolding story: The making of
Tearaway

In his latest Making of, PocetGamer.biz freelancer, Kirk Mckeand, spoke to the talented folks at Media Molecule to find out how they gave life to the gorgeous papercraft adventure game, Tearaway.

"It went from a dungeon-crawler, to open-world-RPG, to an adventure game. Each time we honed in more [on] what was interesting and what we wanted rid of," explained Tearaway lead creator Rex Crowie.

"The paper gave reason as to why you're able to tear through the world, [also] providing a tactile landscape for using the front-touch. A game should be recognisable from a single screenshot and this helped achieve a different look, and a different feel."

Exclusive: Rovio unveils groundbreaking new publishing program

Making its way into the Hot Five for the second time in as many weeks is Rovio's latest third party publishing initiative, which is designed to make learning fun, and introduce a new generation of children to games that "entertain, inspire, and educate".

Rovio is confident that its huge presence in the mobile market will give developers who sign up to the new publishing program "extraordinary visibility" through its cross promotion activities.

"When kids are bored, their learning plummets," detailed the Finnish firm in a statement given to PocketGamer.biz.

"When they're engaged, anything's possible. So we're looking for new game ideas to entertain kids and motivate them to learn. Games that parents can also feel good about."

60 new Flappy Bird clones hit the App Store every day

Roughly 60 new Flappy Bird clones are hitting the App Store every day according to a report on PG.biz sister site, Pocket Gamer.

Our highly trained number crunchers have worked out that a new clone is born every 24 minutes as everyone and their goldfish tries to cash in on the success of Dong Nguyen's original release.

"Our definition of a Flappy Bird clone, by the way, is any game in which you guide some character through an obstacle course of pipes (or similar objects) hanging from the ceiling and sticking out of the ground," explained Pocket Gamer editor Mark Brown.

"That character could be a bird, a fish, an eagle, a super goat, Nyan Cat, Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Bear Grylls on a jet pack, Flappy Bird inventor Dong Nguyen, the floating head of Kanye West, or the chief minister of the state of Gujarat, Narendra Modi."

Phone a friend: QuizUp generated 10 organic installs per paid download

Mobile marketing and monetisation firm, Fisku, recently highlighted the role it played in fuelling the success of Plain Vanilla's viral hit, QuizUp.

Fisku has revealed that as the marketing partner for Plain Vanilla, it managed a campaign that saw the game deliver a click thru rate of 5.6 percent.

More importantly, however, it has been noted that QuizUp managed to generate 10 organic installs for each paid install, a figure that's twenty times higher than expected.

According to Fisku, this helped QuizUp gain the impressive following of over 10 million users that it has today.
