NAVTEQ acquires 3D modelling firm PixelActive

Maps gaining dimension

NAVTEQ acquires 3D modelling firm PixelActive
3D modelling specialist PixelActive has been acquired for an undisclosed fee by Nokia-owned NAVTEQ to aid its delivery of 3D maps.

The 16-strong PixelActive was formed out of the ashes of Take Two developer Angel Studios.

It's had a hand in developing 3D models for video games, as well as serving up its talents for the 3D modeling of detailed road networks, buildings and terrain for simulation, urban planning and navigation-based software.

Now it appears its business will be solely geared towards delivering the latter, with the two parties having previously worked together on NAVTEQ's somewhat limited 3D operations.

Multi-dimensional investment

"The acquisition of PixelActive underscores NAVTEQ’s continued commitment to providing the most advanced digital maps," said NAVTEQ CEO and president Larry Kaplan.

"We are quickly moving to a world of 3D maps and NAVTEQ is taking the necessary steps to continue to provide our customers with a superior offering from which they can differentiate their products."

NAVTEQ claims the PixelActive purchase will accelerate its move into the 3D space, leveraging the firm's technology across its entire line-up.
