Amazon announces Kindle for Windows and Android tablets

Riding the CES 2011 tablet wave

Amazon announces Kindle for Windows and Android tablets
While in typical fashion Amazon refuses to disclose precisely how many of its Kindle devices have left the online retail giant’s warehouses, it was revealed recently that the e-book reader has become not only the fastest-selling but also the best-selling product in its history.

Surpassing even the sales of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the latest version of the Kindle (or Kindle 3 to its mates) has suffered no ill effects from the much heralded tablet competition.

Everywhere and anywhere

Of course, the Kindle platform itself has long ceased to be solely about the hardware, with Kindle apps available for iOS, PC, Mac, BlackBerry, Android, and now Windows Phone 7 handsets ensuring customers can “Buy Once, Read Everywhere”.

To further broaden access to the Kindle Store – which currently houses over 775,000 titles - Amazon announced Kindle for the Web last month, potentially allowing customers to read full books in their browser and independent e-vendors to stock Kindle tomes on their shelves.

And hot on those heels comes the news that bespoke Kindle applications for Windows and Android tablets are incoming, presumably taking a similar form to the existing iPad app.

All aboard the tablet bandwagon

At this rate, it won’t be too long before Kindle software is quite literally everywhere, from connected TVs and in-car monitors, to next-generation consoles and internet cafes, but for the moment Amazon is looking to ride the increasingly high tablet wave.

“Many people are buying both a Kindle and an LCD tablet computer," said Dorothy Nicholls, Director, Amazon Kindle.

It remains to be seen, though, how sales of the latter, particularly in view of the expected CES 2011 tablet onrush, will affect uptake of the former.
