While Samsung took, and beat back, early rumours about a bid for HP's webOS, the smarter money was always on HTC.
Now, the company has revealed it's currently considering whether or not to purchase a mobile OS - presumably webOS as it's the only available target, although conceivably MeeGo could be a potential target.
Either way, HTC said it won't be rushed into an impulsive decision on the matter.
HTC Chairwoman Cher Wang spoke out about HTCs intentions during an interview with the Economic Observer of China.
Free OS a bird
"We have given it thought and we have discussed it internally, but we will not do it on impulse," Wang said.
"We can use any OS we want. We are able to make things different from our rivals on the second or third layer of a platform. Our strength lies in understanding an OS, but it does not mean that we have to produce an OS."
HTC's current strong financial performance is based on heavy adoption of Android, although it was also a launch partner for Windows Phone 7, and is expected to release hardware based on Microsoft's new Mango OS.
