UK lighting technology company Geomerics has been pushing the boundaries of real-time lighting in games for years.
It was its integration into DICE's Battlefield 3 that bought it to mainstream attention, however.
And now a version of that technology is coming to mobile devices.
Palace of delights
First publicly shown at Mobile World Congress, Enlighten Palace for Mobile is a technology demo of how the company's smarts work.
In a similar way to Epic's Epic Citadel demo, Palace features a static location with different controls you can use to change the lighting.
For example, in daylight mode, you can drag the location of the sun horizontally and vertically with your finger.
Or you can switch to the day-to-night cycle to simulate how the lighting changes over the period of a day as the sun rises and falls and the temperature of the light varies.
There are also a number of static cameras positioned in the scene that you can select, as well as preset dynamic paths. And getting technical, there are direct light, indirect light, specular highlights and scene textures options if you want to dig down into Enlighten's workings.
Minimum spec
In terms of what hardware Geomerics' mobile technology will support, the baseline is devices that support the OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics standard.
This includes the likes of iPhone 4S, iPad 2, new iPad and Android devices using Mali 400 (such as Galaxy Tab 10.1) and Tegra 3 chips.
It's expected that the company will release Enlighten Palace for Mobile as standalone free app via Google Play and App Store at some point in the summer.
You can find out more about Geomerics via its website.
