OMGPOP CEO and Zynga VP Dan Porter has confirmed that a sequel to Draw Something is in the works, explaining via Twitter that the follow-up would feature "new ways to draw and connect."
Zynga paid $180 million cash to acquire OMGPOP back in March 2012, at a time when Draw Something was attracting 12-13 million daily active users across mobile and Facebook.
But the game's popularity had already peaked, and the game's audience contracted rapidly.
In its October 2012 preliminary financial report, Zynga wrote off between $85 million and $95 million related to the OMGPOP acquisition.
It's sticky
As such, Zynga will be keen to ensure its Pictionary-style sequel is a great deal stickier than the original, and according to unnamed sources cited in TechCrunch, the social gaming behemoth plans to do this by turning Draw Something 2 into a social network of sorts.
Players will reportedly be able to keep, show off and share their artistic endeavours with other users a canny move given how widely creations from the original game were shared online.
In this way, Zynga hopes that the game's top artists will amass followings within the game, thereby giving accomplished artists an audience and amateurs an extra reason to check in on the app.
