Crowdfunding platform Kickstarter may not be developer's only option when seeking funding for game projects, but it appears one of its most prominent rivals is failing more studios than it supports.
Research published by The Verge claims that 80 percent of projects hosted on Indiegogo which actually set out years before Kickstarter fail to raise more than a quarter of their goal.
The statistic, gathered via results taken from Indiegogo's search engine, suggest the platform is some way behind Kickstarter.
Kickstarter claims 46 percent of campaigns hosted on its platform fail to raise more than 20 percent of their goal a number that's hardly impressive itself, but is still well ahead of Indiegogo's limp performance.
A measure of success?
Indeed, it seem that Indiegogo is destined to continue to play second fiddle, despite being founded in 2007 - two years before Kickstarter arrived on the scene - and hosting what it claims is 1.3 times as many completed projects.
Unlike Kickstarter, however, it's worth remembering that a "completed project" on Indiegogo doesnt necessarily have to have achieved 100 percent funding.
Project creators can choose to proceed with a campaign, even if it doesnt receive the desired amount of financial backing.
Whilst that might seem like a good way to provide flexibility, it also serves to distort what it means to be "successful". Out of the 142,301 projects that have ended on Indiegogo, only 9.3 percent raised 100 percent of their goals or higher, according to an analysis of public data by The Verge.
In comparison, on Kickstarter, roughly 44 percent of projects are successfully funded, reinforcing the notion that for crowdfunding success, Kickstarter remains king.
