MASTERCLASS OVERVIEW

Whether it’s answering a request for proposal (RFP), selling a game's vision to publishers, or starting a new project, writing a professional game pitch document that captures and communicates the essence of an idea to others can be hugely important.

Through over eight years in the games industry, Arran Topalian has been tasked with a lot (a lot!) of design documentation, including pitch work. Over the last three years in particular, he has been responsible for writing and submitting over 20 pitches, each of which has taught him something new, from best practices in formatting to preempting questions from would-be readers.

This MasterClass is designed to equip participants with new skills and knowledge on how to write user-friendly, well-structured pitch documentation that strikes a strong balance between level of detail and upsell. You can expect to learn tips and advice that will ultimately culminate in the creation of the first, and possibly most important, page of your own pitch document by the end of the session.

Key takeaways include:

  • Why game concept pitching can be so important
  • Best practices around how to explain a game concept idea
  • Tips on how to prove the strength of your concept

Mentor: Arran Topalian

Fuelled by a childhood of unforgettable industry-defining games, Arran’s eight-year long career in the games industry has allowed him to work across a wide variety of genres, project sizes and responsibilities, from Sea Of Thieves at Rare to the top-grossing mobile game Yahtzee With Buddies.

Currently employed as a Senior Game Designer by Mediatonic, Arran continues to help teams create life-long, memorable experiences for a new generation of players- and play all the games he possibly can!

CONTENT BREAKDOWN

Part 1:

  • A 20-min talk introducing participants to the MasterClass that covers why game concept pitching can be so important.
  • A group exercise to come up with the seed of an idea based on an imaginary RFP proposed by me.

Part 2:

  • A 20-min talk on best practices around how to explain a game concept idea.
  • A group exercise wherein participants will put together a 1-pager that sells/ explains their game concept.

Part 3:

  • A final 20-min talk about "punching" your game concept- i.e. tips on how to prove out the strength of your concept by asking the right questions.
  • A group exercise that will produce a second pass of their 1-pager that's (hopefully) clearer than the first- possibly even participants swapping RFPs to provide each other with feedback.
