Laying the foundations for cross-platform development

That was the year that was: Tim Closs, Ideaworks Labs
As the year draws to an end, it's time to look back at what happened in the world of mobile gaming during 2009.

Equally, the lessons of history are useless without a future to demonstration what we've learnt, so as well as asking various notables about their view on the past 12 months, we're also getting them to look ahead to 2010.

You can see the full list of our end of year interviews here.

One of the more potentially significant mobile gaming technology launches during 2009 was Ideaworks Lab's Airplay SDK. It enables developers to create iPhone, Android, Symbian, Windows Mobile and BREW games from a single binary.

We caught up with Ideaworks Labs' CTO Tim Closs to get his take on how the year had played out.

Pocket Gamer: What was the most significant event of 2009?

Tim Closs: The iPhone OS 3.0. It showed the next wave of features that will help drive the industry forward, including in-app transactions and push-notifications.

What was the most significant event for Ideaworks?

Amongst the global Call of Duty hysteria, Ideaworks Game Studio developed Call of Duty: World at War: Zombies for Activision. It was the #1 grossing title on the US and UK App Stores in November.

What was your favourite mobile game of 2009?

Backbreaker Football, which was built as a partnership between NaturalMotion and Ideaworks Game Studio. It showed it's possible to build innovative, console-quality but mobile-centric games for a fraction of the silly money thrown at branded titles. Its #1 App Store slot was the proof point.

What do you predict will be the most important trends in 2010?

I hate to say it but... porting! But not as we know it. Now that half-decent app stores are starting to emerge from some OEMs, operators and platform-owners, there will be a wave of apps being ported from iPhone onto some of these channels/devices.

Of course our own Airplay SDK makes this a snip (...sound of Tim being bundled off by PG security staff)

If you could enforce one New Year's resolution, what would it be?

Treat developers with respect - without them there's no industry. Oh, and a blanket ban within marketing materials on the word "compelling".

Thanks to Tim for his time.
