Motorola isn't ditching the Windows Mobile smartphone platform, the company says, despite recent layoffs in its WinMo dev team.
77 jobs are going in Moto's Plantation Florida office relating to Windows Mobile development, the company revealed late last week.
However, spokesperson Maya Komadina tells Network World that this doesn't mean Motorola is edging out of the platform.
"It is important to note that Motorola's strategy for the Mobile Devices business has not changed - we continue to focus on Windows Mobile as one of our software platforms, and there are teams working on Windows Mobile development at other facilities," she said.
Earlier this month, there were rumours that Motorola was shifting its smartphone focus to Android. There's no doubt that the company is extremely keen on that platform, but for now, it's insisting that it's also committed to WinMo.
Analyst Jack Gold suggests in the same article that Motorola may focus on Windows Mobile for business handsets and Android for consumer phones.
