Sales of Sony's new PS Vita handheld have reached 1.2 million across the world, Sony Computer Entertainment has announced.
The Japanese giant claims its figures "have exceeded expectations" and "firmly [establish] PS Vita as the must-have portable entertainment device across the world."
Interestingly, Sony has elected to publish a combined worldwide total, rather than provide any of its local markets a breakdown.
History lesson
Back in 2005, Sony's PSP smashed week one console sales records in the UK, with over 185,000 units sold.
It is thought that Sony has fallen short of that total this time around, and has been contacted for clarification.
Meanwhile, Sony has also shed some light on software sales to date, with a combined two million titles sold across both retail and PlayStation Network.
It is unknown what the precise split in sales was between digital and retail.
Social star
Sony president Andrew House said the company "couldn't be more thrilled" with consumer reaction.
"The market has responded and there is clear demand for a mobile device capable of providing a revolutionary combination of rich gaming and social connectivity within a real world context," he said.
House added that Sony would be continuing to ensure "the best games and franchises possible" would be coming to PS Vita later this year by continuing to work with third parties.
"[We] will have something for everyone across the globe," he concluded.

There's no such thing as 'not enough time' in Kristan's world. Despite the former Eurogamer editor claiming the world record for the most number of game reviews written before going insane, he manages to continue to squeeze in parallel obsessions with obscure bands, Norwich City FC, and moody episodic TV shows. He might even read a book if threatened by his girlfriend.
