Subway Surfers hit monthly download record of 52.5m in June 2018

SYBO’s hit endless runner Subway Surfers ran up 52.5 million downloads in June 2018, its best-ever month.

The title was launched six years ago and has since racked up more than 2.1 billion downloads in total.

Speaking at Pocket Gamer Connects Helsinki 2018, SYBO CEO Mathias Nørvig described the title as “the most popular game you’ve never heard of”.

Surf's up

As to why June 2018 was the game’s best month, Nørvig said the studio doesn’t quite have the full knowledge of why, but believe it’s down to a number of factors including its new short-form animations - which it hopes to turn into long-form - and a push into China.

From the game’s total 2.1 billion downloads, Subway Surfers currently maintains a consistent 100 million monthly active users and 20 million daily active users. Nørvig said however that these numbers are slightly old and may be higher following June’s download surge.

No details were provided on revenue figures. Recently market data firm Sensor Tower reported that Subway Surfers has brought in $80 million from in-app purchases. Advertising revenue was not taken into account.

Pocket Gamer Connects will return in London on January 21st to 22nd 2019.
