About this Event
The PocketGamer.biz MasterClasses are a new series of deep-dive workshop sessions, covering practical game design topics. They include online webinar lessons and workshop sessions conducted by video.
PocketGamer.biz is well known for its conferences and round-tables, but the short nature of these sessions means they only scratch the surface of important subjects. For real in-depth learning, we have worked with industry experts to create the MasterClasses. They are professional half-day activities featuring tutorials and breakout groups, all accessed from your home office.
There are four sessions running in August 2020 (see below), and this session is: Game Economy Design And Optimization with Nick Murray
OVERVIEW
Game economy is a crucial but often overlooked part of game design which has a far-reaching impact on retention and monetization KPIs. By building a robust economy, games can engage users, giving them a more enjoyable experience. Economies define difficulty, player progress and enjoyment!
About the host
Nick Murray, an 11-year veteran of the f2p industry (former Rovio, Ubisoft, Aeria Games, GREE) will share methods and clear plans on how to think about economy creation, post-launch economy optimization and overcoming the challenges in creating value for virtual items.
Content
The workshop will focus on three subject areas:
Part 1 - Creating a virtual economy from scratch
How to think about designing your economy. Which tools do you use? What are the key opportunities and challenges? How can we apply these lessons in practice?
Part 2: Understanding a live economy and optimizing against data
How do we use the right data to tackle an unbalanced economy? How can I minimize player churn within the first days? How can I tune my game to different player types? There will be some very basic data analysis (in Google Sheets only).
Part 3: Optimizing value in a virtual economy
Lastly, we will look at how to make sure that item value is the best it can be, how to drive further value through live operations strategy and reach the maximum monetization potential of content.
Attendees will learn
• Why game economy design is so critical and plays a key role in defining the success of a game and its KPIs
• The steps to design a strong economy, avoiding pitfalls and following best practices to drive significant retention and monetization improvement
• How to balance a game post-launch, which data is required to do so and how to not upset your community while doing it
• How to boost the value of monetizable game content and ensure that money isn’t left on the table
Format of teaching
This will be a highly interactive session. We’ll use Zoom as our primary platform, supported by Miro for shared whiteboards. We’ll also use Google Sheets for some of the practical work. For each subtopic we will have the following format:
20 mins presentation
20 mins group work
20 mins feedback/review
60 mins x 3 = three hours total
There will be audience participation encouraged throughout the MasterClass.
Target audience
Any level of seniority from the disciplines of Development, Design, Product, Live Ops Business Intelligence, Production etc. This workshop is suitable for game teams within almost any genre - it isn’t suitable for example for hypercasual as the economy isn’t deep enough.
