The PocketGamer.biz MasterClasses are a new series of deep-dive workshop sessions, covering practical game design topics. They include online webinar lessons and workshop sessions conducted by video.

PocketGamer.biz is well known for its conferences and round-tables, but the short nature of these sessions means they only scratch the surface of important subjects. For real in-depth learning, we have worked with industry experts to create the MasterClasses. They are professional half-day activities featuring tutorials and breakout groups, all accessed from your home office.

There are four sessions running in August 2020 (see below), and this session is: Product Management – Bringing Value To Your Players with Karla Reyes

OVERVIEW

In this three-hour masterclass, participants will learn about how to identify and understand the target audience for the games they are developing, validating that they are targeting the right audience and ultimately determining the best ways to bring value to players.

We will be implementing proven design thinking tools and methodologies such as persona development, empathy mapping, and completing a value proposition canvas. Participants will also learn best practices around effective user research and testing.

About the host
Karla Reyes is a Product Manager at Square Enix and has over seven years of experience in product management. Karla previously worked in the fintech and blockchain industries across North America and EMEA at Thomson Reuters, Visa and ConsenSys. She is trained in human-centred design/design thinking.

Content
Participants should leave this class with an understanding of how to discover new market opportunities, identify target audience, validate (or invalidate) assumptions via different testing methods and generate actionable data-driven insights to improve their games and increase player appreciation. Participants should also leave the workshop with the knowledge and confidence to implement these tools within their own teams.

o Market Segmentation, Persona Development & Empathy Mapping – In this section, we will establish the importance of understanding your target audience, explore segmentation and player motivation models, learn market research methods and identify your target players.

o Value Proposition Canvas – After mapping your customer profile and identifying the jobs, pains and gains of your target users, we will determine product-market fit by outlining which game features address those jobs, pains and gains and can deliver value to players.

o Effective User Research – We will finally explore which user research methods would be most effective within the context of your project and cover best practices for writing user interview and playtest questions that will elicit the feedback you need in order to improve to your games and make players happy!

Format of teaching
This class will be hosted via Zoom, and we will use Mural and Google docs for group activities. For each subtopic we will have the following format:

20 mins lecture

20 mins group activity

20 mins feedback

60 mins x 3 = three hours total

There will be audience participation encouraged throughout the MasterClass.

Target audience
This class welcomes anyone from an individual indie developer to developers from larger/AAA studios. All disciplines are welcome, but this will be most relevant for Product Managers, UX Designers, Marketing/Brand and UA Managers.
