Each week, we'll be counting down the biggest news from the previous seven days, giving just a glimpse of the industry's big issues, from five to one.

Three kings: Supercell, GungHo and King outstrip EA as iOS's top revenue raisers

They may have started out life as indies like any other, but the mobile market is now being led by three superstars: Finnish outfit Supercell, UK-based King and the Asian superstar that is GungHo Online Entertainment.

All three outfits are leading iOS in terms of revenue based on an especially narrow band of titles according to analytics outfit App Annie, with all three outperforming the publishing behemoth that is Electronic Arts.

"As has been the case in previous months, the most stark element of Supercell, GungHo and King's success is how all three have been able to foster success on the back of a relatively small clutch of titles," detailed editor Keith Andrew last Monday.

"Whereas EA, Gameloft et al secured their top ten places on the back of hundreds of releases, Supercell sits on top of iOS's charts with revenue generated from just two games – Clash of Clans and Hay Day."

The Charticle: Does charging $20 for a brand like XCOM: Enemy Unknown work on iOS?

What happens when you launch a game onto a marketplace dominated by free or 99c releases at a price point of $19.99?

Of course, XCOM: Enemy Unknown is no normal game, and – compared to the $40 PC release, the iOS version is something of a bargain. But can it really compete in a marketplace where near $20 price points are so rare that they're newsworthy in their own right?

"Only released on Thursday (20th June), it's nevertheless boomed into the top grossing game charts, hitting #4 for iPad in the US, and #11 on iPhone," detailed editor-at-large Jon Jordan.

"Perhaps as expected, however, these were day one peaks, with the game now starting a slow decline. In total, XCOM has been a top 10 top grossing game in 55 countries; not bad going considering it's a straight port of a game that's been out for nine months.

"And that's certainly providing a nice spurt of revenue for 2K, while proving it can push the price for well-loved and critically-acclaimed content on iOS. We'll see how well it rides the downwards price spiral; no doubt it's a game that will get its fair share of sale opportunities."

Microsoft: We've knocked BlackBerry out of the smartphone race

Such is the dominance of iOS and Android that, for anyone looking for a bit of excitement from the smartphone race has had to look for the battle for third place.

That battle, if you're not aware, is currently being fought between Windows Phone 8 in one corner and BlackBerry 10 in the other. According to Microsoft – perhaps predictably – it's the former that's winning.

"We think we're solidly the third ecosystem right now," said Windows Phone product manager Larry Lieberman at Microsoft's Build developers conference in San Francisco.

"That's a huge announcement in some respects. I don't think they can bring to the table some of the things we have. The fact like we're delivering across such a different set of price points to such a large audience."

Supercell on mobile: We're competing with 'the smartest guys on the planet'

Over the course of the last year or so, Supercell has been transformed from a notable newcomer to the mobile scene to an outfit now hosting its own free to play festival in Helsinki.

Indeed, it was at that festival – Free Your Play 2013 – that we caught up with CEO Ilkka Paananen.

"What I love about games is you're competing against the smartest guys on the planet, and it is very competitive, but at the same time, everyone gets along super-well and is friendly," said Paananen of the market Supercell is currently dominating.

"And I think the market is so big, there is success for everybody."

Paananen's words came just as Supercell launched a Japanese language version of its phenomenally successful Clash of Clans, which – thanks to a cross-promotion deal with local favourite Puzzle & Dragons by Gungho – shot to the top of the free download charts.

Nintendo makes free-to-play foray with 'tactical submarine simulator' Steel Diver

If the interest by PocketGamer.biz has any bearing on where Nintendo takes its business next, then it'll be free-to-play all the way.

The week before last, news of Nintendo's first F2P release – a follow-up to 3DS release Steel Driver – was the most read story on the site. Last week, it again topped the poll, with an almost identical number of page views.

Can Nintendo make it three – or should that be 'free' – weeks in a row?
