As we consider the trends of the past 12 months and look forward to the next 12 months, we've asked the great and the good in the mobile gaming industry for their opinions.
Oscar Clark is the Evangelist for gameplay video sharing tool Everyplay from Applifier.
He has been a project strategist and designer on mobile, online and on consoles since 1998 with British Telecom's Wireplay, 3UK and as Home architect for PlayStation Home. Additionally, he has acted as a spokesperson for RealNetworks, Nvidia and Papaya Mobile.
Pocket Gamer: What do you think was the most significant event for the mobile games industry in 2012?
Oscar Clark: For me, it's between the launch of CSR Racing and Clash of Clans. These both smashed the preconceptions in terms of quality and revenue of freemium games and the rhythms of play.
At the same time the decline of Zynga is a sobering reminder of the importance of innovation and quality over monetisation.
What was the most significant event for your company?
Applifier releasing its Everyplay SDK allowing players to record and share their gameplay with their friends.
What was your favourite mobile game of the year?
That's tough there are just too many. CSR Racing, Total War Battles and Kings of Dragon Pass all feature highly, though.
What do you predict will be the most important trends in 2013?
Obviously, it will be the need to have video capture and sharing of your gameplay using Everyplay. But beyond that we are still in a mode of transition.
I suspect there will be a freemium hangover for titles that overly exploit players, but from that will emerge a focus on better games delivered as a service which people will love.
I suspect paymium will still be growing, but by the end of the year I think this model will decline and instead there will be more focus on durable goods purchases in the game which limit the player exposure to too many nagging ongoing payments.
What's your New Year's resolution and what resolution would you enforce on the industry?
For me, I need to find a way to get some work/life balance.
And for the industry I would suggest we should redress the balance between monetisation and art, but that's about inspiring us to make better freemium content which I will continue to write about.
