A recent report put out by ComScore highlights the top smartphone operating systems in use in the US over the last nine-month period, which is topped out by RIM devices by an impressive margin.
The closest competitor is Apple, which in October had yet to achieve the figures that RIM's BlackBerry was enjoying at the beginning of the survey in February. The figures represent smartphone ownership, rather than units sold, however, and it's clear to see that Apple is closing the gap.
The iPhone was chasing after Windows Mobile the whole year, finally forging ahead by quite a margin in October. Palm performed reasonably well, considering its long absence from the market and limited number of handsets available, while Google's Android platform still lags behind the fast disappearing Symbian system.
There are currently around 36 million smartphone users in the US according to the report, and it appears the race is now on between Apple and long-established Research in Motion.
