While the world might have its eyes locked on Sony's PlayStation 4 and Microsoft's forthcoming Xbox unveiling, Nvidia believes smartphones are on the verge of out powering their predecessors.
Senior VP of content and technology Tony Tamasi has claimed the next generation of smartphones will leave current consoles in their wake.
Next generation
"The PS3 and Xbox 360 are barely more powerful than mobile devices...The next click of mobile phones will outperform [them]," said Tamasi, according to Bit-Tech.
The site points out that chips equipped in Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are capable of around 200GFLOPS, while Nvidia's flagship graphics card the GeForce Titan can hit 1.8TFLOPS.
That's a measure the PS4 will also be capable of hitting.
Tamasi was, of course, making reference to Nvidia's own chipsets, with the company aiming for the chip generation that follows its current Tegra 4 model set to be deployed within Nvidia's forthcoming Project Shield - to be in as many mobile devices as possible.
Indeed, given that, by that stage, new consoles from Sony and Microsoft will likely be a reality, it's a wonder why Tamasi is using current systems as a benchmark.
'Two to three years'
Arguably more interesting was the prediction made by Fishlabs CEO Michael Schade at Casual Connect Europe in Hamburg in February.
During his presentation at the event, Schade said he believed new consoles from Microsoft and Sony will be matched by mobile devices "within two or three years."
"Also, the next consoles will all be full HD but that's something mobile already has, so from a certain perspective, mobile is already ahead of console."
