The last year hasn't been easy for THQ Wireless, seeing its revenues fall at a time when rivals like Gameloft and Glu Mobile are growing.
In the last three months of 2007, the company made $5.3 million (£2.7m) from mobile games, compared to $7.5 million (£3.8m) in the same period of 2006. However, parent company THQ's CEO Brian Farrell is still optimistic, judging by an interview with PaidContent.
"We've learned an awful lot about what works and doesn't work in the mobile space, and we see it as a legitimate platform," he says.
So what's the solution? Farrell apparently thinks the problem with mobile is playability (although surely rival publishers are facing the same problem?) but is enthusiastic about the iPhone, for which THQ Wireless is developing several games.
Farrell also highlights the difficulty of promoting own-IP mobile games, so it looks like THQ Wireless may focus more on games based on big brands
However, he does hold out the intriguing possibility of mobile games connecting to THQ's PC titles with an "upload extension" strategy - where you might train a character on your phone then upload it to the PC game. Interesting.
