Samsung is attempting to fuel innovative development for its Smart TVs by offering developers the chance to win a collective $225,000 in cash and prizes.
The Free the TV challenge asks developers to create the most innovative converged application possible utilising its Smart TV SDK plus one other device, be it smartphone, tablet or PC.

The judges' criteria will be quality and innovation of the idea, functional implementation, and overall visual appeal.
First prize will be $100,000, and a 65" LED D8000 Series Smart TV. The first place application will also be featured for 2 months in the Recommended section of the Samsung Apps store.
The second place prize is $75,000, and a 55" LED D8000 Series Smart TV, with the application receiving 2 months in the Product Information Area of the Samsung Smart Hub.
Those in third place receive $50,000, a 55" LED D8000 Series Smart TV. The application will be featured for 1 month in the Product Information Area.
All of the top three finalists will also receive a 32GB Galaxy Tab 10.1.
The submission period for apps is from September 12 through to November 29, whilst the judging will take place from December 2-16. The lucky winners will be announced on January 13, 2012.
