Android passes iOS to account for almost 1 in 4 smartphone users across EU5

But still trails Symbian by some distance

Android passes iOS to account for almost 1 in 4 smartphone users across EU5
With Symbian's longterm dominance in Europe set to slip once Nokia adopts Windows Phone, Android is positioning itself as its likely successor by slipping into second place across the EU5.

The latest numbers from comScore's sweep of the European market in July – including the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy – show Symbian still has a market leading share of almost 38 percent, down from just below 54 percent during the same month last year.

Second spot, which last year went to iPhone with a 19 percent share, is now in the hands of Google, accounting for almost 1 in 4 smartphone subscribers across the five territories.

Succeeding Symbian

"Smartphone adoption has seen significant growth from the previous year, driven in large part by the increasing popularity of the Google Android platform," said comScore Europe VP for mobile Jeremy Copp.

"Although Symbian continues to lead the EU5 smartphone market, Android is gaining fast and recently passed Apple to become the second most popular platform.

"Network operators, publishers and advertisers looking to effectively reach the European mobile audience must pay close attention to the continued growth of Android in the region, as it will likely have far-reaching implications for the mobile media landscape."

Super Samsung, hearty HTC

Of all of the Android OEMs, Samsung is currently top dog in four of the five regions – France, Germany, Italy and Spain – while HTC controls more than half of the market in the UK.

The Taiwanese firm's dominance across Britain means, in terms of the entire EU5, HTC is currently Android's biggest player, with a 34.6 percent share.
