PocketGamer.biz is regularly rounding up the most interesting games that are currently in soft launch.
An important part of the games-as-a-service approach, the soft launch process enables developers to fine-tune their game, particularly in relation to meta-game mechanics such as time gates, in-game resources and psychological components.
Behind the scenes
Of course, some games require more time in soft launch than others; something that can reveal a game experiencing more serious issues than mere fine-tuning.
But, along with that, the main point of the feature is to get you excited about the games you'll soon be able to play...
The free-to-play casual puzzler will offer the classic slingshot gameplay that helped make the birds famous but with a new spin on the mechanic. Aimed at beginners to the series as well as long-time veterans, Angry Birds Journey will present brain-testing slingshot-based puzzles in a new art style.
Fan-favourite characters will return and new faces will make their debut for the first time, as the group uncover the story and explore new locales. Rovio will monitor and react to player feedback of Angry Birds Journey to make improvements and "chart a flight path" for the title going forward.
Rovio has subsequently confirmed to PG.biz that Angry Birds Journey is a rebrand of Angry Birds Casual, which was originally given a two-month soft launch phase back in March 2020.
