PopCap retires Bejeweled 2 + Blitz but releases first freemium iOS game as it refreshes brand on iPhone
Setting itself up for the brave new mobile world, PopCap has pulled its original iPhone version of Bejeweled 2 + Blitz from the App Store, splitting it into two new games.

The first is just called Bejeweled - or 'all-new Bejeweled according to PopCap's press release - and comes with improved graphics, Classic, Zen and Diamond Mine modes, user profiles, leaderboards, ten achievement badges, and a player ranking system.

It costs 99c, €0.79 or 69p.

Getting with the program

PopCap is also launching a separate and freemium version of Bejeweled Blitz, which has Retina display support, a new user interface, a daily spin for bonus coins, and Facebook integration.

It's the first freemium title PopCap has released for iPhone.

"With nearly 40 million mobile units sold over the past eight years, Bejeweled is the second best selling mobile game of all time, behind only Tetris," noted Giordano Bruno Contestabile, Bejeweled franchise business director at PopCap Games.

"As we strive to reach virtually everyone with a mobile communications device, PopCap will continue to make games that are even more accessible to that ever-expanding global audience. We're taking a critical step toward this goal with the introduction of these new Bejeweled titles that will enhance our offerings on the iPhone for years to come."
